16th August 2014 calls for music lovers to gather at Surf Beachm Sunway Lagoon, where the 6th MTV World Stage Malaysia took place. The stellar line-up of performers B.o.B, Yuna, Boys Republic and Thaitanium rocked the stage in Malaysia with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop and K-pop performances.
Although the concert would only start at 7:30pm, we began to see crowd at the entrance by 4:30pm, and more came along as time went by. Then it started to drizzle, but the rain did not put off the music lovers. The fans only had this in their mind, be it rain or shine, the MTV World Stage Malaysia 2014 MUST take place!
As the night fallen, the entire Surf Beach was lighted up by the stage lights and all ready for a night of great music!!!
The Thai-American Hip Hop music group, Thaitanium did the opening act where KHAN, WAY, DAY, BIG CALO and Tony B got the audience heated up and all set for the night. They wowed the audience with an upbeat 11-track medley, including an inaugural performance of their new single with Snoop Dogg, “Wake Up (Bangkok City)” where they tweaked the lyrics to “Wake Up (KL City)”.
The line-up continued with the 5 cute Korean guys from Boys Republic, kicking off their performance with “You Are Special”. The boys charmed the audience as they expressed their love in returning to Malaysia. The audience had the previlege to catch Boys Republic’s maiden performance of “Video Game” remix version on the MTV World Stage Malaysia, where fans were invited to post 15-second mobile phone clips on Instagram to #worldstagemyfancam.
One lucky fan, who won Boys Republic’s “Girlfriend” contest, was introduced during “Dress Up”, whom she got curated towards a new Korean look by the K-Pop group’s stylist and received a wardrobe she strutted proudly on-stage as the boys serenaded her. Their show culminated with fan favourite, “Party Rock”.
The crowd gave a rousing welcome to their home girl, Yuna as she was elevated on to the stage, singing “Falling” against a backdrop of waterfall pyrotechnics. She sang a balance number of both English and Malay songs, enticing audience with “Mountains”, “Lelaki”, “Dan Sebanarya”, “Lights And Camera” and “Terukir Di Bintang”; and mesmerized the fans as she performed “Rescue” with her ukulele. Her songs were totally refreshing, yet with her powerful vocal. The Malaysian superstar then wrapped up her set with the song, “Come Back”.
Returning to Malaysia, the international rapper, B.o.B, impressed the audience with an energetic performance of a 16-track medley that kept the audience bobbing, e.g., “Don’t Let Me Fall”, “Ready ft. Future”, “Headband ft. 2 Chainz”, “John Doe ft. Priscilla” and “So Good”. Through out his performace, B.o.B thrilled his fans by randomly snapping selfies with their phone and went crowd surfing. MTV World Stage Malaysia 2014 was lit up with audience waving their mobile phones to a soulful performance of “Both of Us ft. Taylor Swift”. It was a poignant moment when B.o.B dedicated global hit song “Airplanes ft. Hayley Williams of Paramore”, to all those who had lost loved ones in recent tragedies.
